Cate is subject to all of your typical human emotions (like love and fear), but she fights very hard to do what she thinks is right and smart, instead of trying to take the easy way out. She was strong and independent, but not so much that she was abrasive or foolish. I wasn't able to to that with this book, which made me very happy! I can only imagine how much research Klein put into writing this novel, but it definitely paid off. As a former Global Studies major, I've taken quite a few history classes, and I'm usually able to pick out at least a few minor errors in most historical fiction. Speaking of historical accuracy, I was amazed by the detail that went into Cate of the Lost Colony. The characters were just as real, the writing was just as good, and Klein's historical accuracy was spot on, as usual. Klein has written a few books between Ophelia and Cate, but this is only the second one that I've read.Ĭate of the Lost Colony definitely lived up to the high standard set by Ophelia. As such, I was really excited to read Cate of the Lost Colony.

The author's note is helpful in clarifying fact from fiction. While the writing is smooth and easy to follow, only true American-history enthusiasts will find this novel interesting enough to read in its entirety. Chapters containing Ralegh's writings and memorandums alternate with those about Cate and Manteo, who is educated in English and charged with negotiations with the Natives. She enlists the help of Manteo to learn their language and, predictably, a romance grows from that. Clearly this forbidden relationship doesn't evolve, and Cate's life becomes consumed with surviving in Roanoke with hostile Natives threatening to attack.
